- Advice, negotiation and litigation for individuals and organizations on all aspects of tax disputes involving the Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act (HST/GST), Excise Act and provincial tax legislation, including Aboriginal tax law issues.
- Prevention and resolution of tax matters concerning unfiled returns, unreported income, undeclared foreign income or assets, the General Anti-Avoidance Rule, unpaid tax debts, the negotiation of payment plans, filing of taxpayer fairness relief applications to reduce or eliminate interest charges and penalties, and provincial tax issues including tobacco, sales and fuel taxes.
- Assistance and representation in responding to tax assessments, reassessments, audits, information demands, inquiry hearings, investigations, search and seizure, and prosecutions.
- Advocacy before government officials and the courts involving tax objections, appeals and judicial reviews, including at the Tax Court, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Canada and provincial courts.
GORDON SCOTT CAMPBELL’S TAX LAW EXPERIENCE
- Litigated tax law cases up to level of Supreme Court of Canada, including in the Tax Court, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, Ontario Court of Justice, Ontario Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Appeal.
- Dealt extensively with Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act and Excise Act matters.
- Advised the Canada Revenue Agency – working closely with auditors, special investigators and senior managers up to the Deputy Minister of National Revenue - on Canadian and international tax law, including audits, domestic and international investigations and dispute resolution.
- Served as lead negotiator for Canada in multilateral negotiations with First Nations involving taxation agreements.
- Managed domestic and transnational tax issues arising out of electronic commerce, including dealing with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the G8/G20 while serving as Canada’s Director of E-Business Development with Industry Canada.
- Author of the The Investigator’s Legal Handbook (Toronto: Thomson Carswell, 2006), Le manuel juridique de l’enquêteur (Cowansville, QC: Yvon Blais, 2010) and articles cited as judicial authority in the field of tax law.
